My personal favorite is Twitter because of it’s stream of check-ins, photos, comments, deals, and @ replies that leave you hungry for more! On other occasions I use Facebook to receive updates from friends. There has been an outbreak of horror stories from small businesses who have gone bankrupt from doing a deal with Groupon. The most recent example being the cupcake shop whose orders increased by almost 10x at 75% off the original value. As a result the benefit of Groupon, and other deal sites, for small businesses has been heavily scrutinized. BUT – there are ways to negotiate an offer such that it’s a good deal AND a profitable business decision. The key is structuring them properly such that they induce the rewards you’re looking for, without overextending your costs.

Twenty-eleven is coming to a close and although The Dealmix has only been around for a few months, we have noticed some interesting trends in our Daily Deal Search Engine. We wanted to share our findings, and give users insight on how people are using search to find the deals they want.

The marketplace for daily deals is becoming so extensive that the use of search is increasing substantially as more and more deal content becomes available. Our goal is to make finding the deals you want as simple as possible. Need a massage? Search for it. Going out for drinks in a certain part of town? Zoom in and search for it. Daily Deal Gift Guide: How to turn a good deal into a Great Gift.
With the number of deal sites growing everyday and the holidays right around the corner, the question becomes: can daily deals really make good gifts? The answer is YES, when done right. In celebration of Cyber Monday The Dealmix is helping deal lovers figure out how to make a good deal a great gift by laying out the pros, cons, and options.
Why give deals as gifts?

- It’s easy. Can easily browse and purchase local experiences online.
- There are so many options, with over 650 deal sites out there.
MYTH: If I gift from a deal site, I’ll look cheap.
Firstly, deals are so common place now that it’s becoming much less taboo; there are even ‘expensive’ deal sites (Gilt). In a recent survey from The Dealmix, 80% of people between the ages of 25-35 said they would have no problem if someone used a coupon while they were out. Secondly, the recipient doesn’t actually have to know how much you paid for the deal. There are lots of deal sites with actual objects that you can get shipped and give as gifts (Woot, One Kings Lane, etc) and sites like Groupon and Living Social are making goods more commonplace as well this season. There’s no way to know the purchase value as an object, all the recipient knows is they’re getting a great gift. If you go the experiential route – think about doing things together. You can get a certificate for a spa or restaurant and take your loved ones out to indulge without ever exposing the face value of the experience.
Things to remember…
- Check the expiration date! Don’t buy if it’ll expire soon.
- Think about location. Don’t buy a voucher for a place no one will ever actually go to.
- Choose your deal site wisely. Certain sites are better for certain types of people. Check out a previous post “Which Deal Site Are You?” to determine which one is best.
